Piver's Island

Piver's Island

Pivers Island, a 24-acre island off the coast of Morehead City, is home to The North Carolina Coastal Reserve, National Estuarine Research Reserve, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Lab, and Duke University’s Marine Laboratory. In an effort to reduce the impacts of marine lab operations on the surrounding environment, The NC Division of Coastal Management implemented a suite of stormwater and aquaculture effluent control measures to protect water quality of the surrounding tidal waters. In addition, the site serves as a demonstration project to surrounding communities. Tours and workshops increase understanding of stormwater control measures and suggest new methods for how coastal communities can reduce development-related environmental impacts. The Pivers Island completed in 2017. For more information see the following interactive link: http://noaa.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapTour/index.html?appid=e3e16133c38349deab8b38cc06e979ab
